This Year's Model Updates:

Very minimal changes this year as Pontiac concentrates on Grand Prix and Trans Sport launches. Air conditioning is now standard. Also, three new colors are added.

Pros:
  • Cheap thrills, sporty image, fun Twin Cam engine
Cons:
  • Aging platform, poor handling, uncomfortable seats

  • Decent Car for the $ - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

This is a decent car with good performance, adequate handling, and great looks. Original BF Goodrich tires were marginal in wet conditions, so Goodyear Auqatreads were put on (and do MUCH better). Biggest headache for DIYers is changing the serpentine belt - it required special tool rental and removing an upper motor mount! No belt should be that involved!

  • Works for me - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

I love it. It has great acceleration, Ive had nothing go wrong with it, and I like the style. I just drove 2000 miles on vacation and it still runs like a champ. All my friends love it too, they want to drive it and I have had many offers for it.

  • Great car overall - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

The car is great. Its been to Florida several times. Its much more fun and comfortable to drive than a Cadilac Seville. Ive had to replace the passenger window motor ($150) and the shift column assembly ($325) in the five years Ive owned it. Brakes and tires are worn fairly quick. Its well worth the little extra surprises in my book!

  • Love my GT - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

I have a purple Grand Am GT right now and have owned it for a year. Except for having to replace the driverside window (which I guess is pretty common in Grand Ams), I have had a great experience with it. In fact, I love it so much that Im checking into buying a 2003 Grand Am GT.

  • good car - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

I have had this car around for awhile. It has 240,000 miles on it,3.1v6. Had the water pump replaced at 230,000 and new intake manifold gaskets last week. Cant complain about that after this many miles.Basic maintenance items shocks struts, tune ups, fluid changes brakes etc. Still runs great and looks good.

  • Nothing Special - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

Mediocre. Ok to drive and looks ok, but nothing to get excited about. Like 4 drs, not too small inside, gd size trunk, 4 cyl engine gd on fuel and has some zip, water pump went at 80,000mi and costs approx $800. to replace because of intense labor chg, replaced struts, lcd on stereo shot, otherwise mechanically ok.

  • Ill Miss Her - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

I absolutely loved this car, it was my baby, my pride and joy. Mother bought it back in 02 and gave it to me in 07 as a graduation gift. We did spend X amount of dollars fixing the water pump, alternator, and the heater coil. Other than that, the car was everything I could have asked for. It finally broke 120k miles in the beginning of Feb, but on the 14th I lost control of it, barrel rolled it, and it was totaled. She was a very good reliable car throughout her 12 years she gave to me and the elderly couple that owned it before me.

  • Very Dependable Car! - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM
    By -

I bought this car brand new in September 1997. It now (Feb. 2005) has 95000 miles. I am very impressed with its dependability. The only problem that frustrated me was that the brakes needed to be replaced more often than most other cars. I love the radio and overall design. I am looking forward to driving it many, many more miles!

  • Great car for 7 years - 1997 Pontiac Grand AM

My 1997 SE V6 still runs strong and smooth. It has required extremely little attention besides synthetic oil changes every 6 months. Overall red paint still looks great. No gosh-awful chrome/aluminum/titanium interior trim that seems every nicer vehicle has to have these days!!

Great car have had it for four years. Drive from Philly to Pittsburgh a lot. Only had to replace heater core recently and a lower control arm.
